CELSA TO CHAIR THE EUROPEAN EMPLOYERS’ ASSOCIATION OF STEEL COMPANIES, EUROFER

  • By 2030, CELSA Group has set itself the goal of reducing CO2 emissions from scope 1 and 2 by 50%, as well as becoming a Net Positive company and completing its circularity by 2050.

Barcelona, November 10th, 2022.- The Board of the association representing European steel companies (EUROFER) has unanimously elected the president and CEO of CELSA Group, Francesc Rubiralta, as its new president, replacing Geert Van Poelvoorde, who held the position since 2015.

Francesc Rubiralta has chaired CELSA Group since 2010 and has been Vice-President of EUROFER since 2020. In addition, since 2019 he has been vice president of the Spanish employers’ association of the sector (UNESID) and member of its executive committee.

Rubiralta said after his appointment that he is honored to take over from Geert Van Poelvoorde, “who guided us safely through a difficult period,” he said. For the new president of EUROFER the same challenges still persist in these unprecedented times.” “The energy crisis, the completion of the transition to green steel and the significant increase in steel imports are issues that need to be addressed,” he added.

“As Vice-President of EUROFER I have learned that the strength of the European steel industry lies in its diversity and its ability to speak with one voice. This will also guide my work from now on as president,” said Francesc Rubiralta, who thanked the trust and support of all the members who have entrusted him with the new responsibility. “Together, we are stronger,” he concluded.

In addition, the General Director of EUROFER, Axel Eggert, highlighted the role of the organization’s leadership during the seven years in which it was chaired by Van Poelvoorde, who led the entire sector in adverse situations such as the sudden increases in steel imports, which distort the market, or the recent pandemic.

“Francesc Rubiralta will continue this successful leadership, having been a very active member of our association’s Board for 12 years. At the same time, he will give further impetus to achieve the ‘green steel revolution’, ensuring access to affordable, low-carbon energy and scrap steel, which is essential for the decarbonisation of the industry, while preserving the strategic autonomy of our sector, as we are now struggling with unbearable energy cost and further massive increases in imports from third countries.” Axel Egert said.
