Celsa France recognized as a leader in sustainability

Bayona, March 24, 2017

  • CELSA France has been recognized this year as the `Sustainable Company of 2017´ by the Chamber of Commerce of the Bayona Basque Country. This organization, which arranges the Trophées de l’Industrie awards within the week dedicated to Eco-industry at a national level, has highlighted that the Celsa France project is fully part of the circular economy and sustainable development. The main distinction is that 100% of the company´s raw material – scrap – comes from recycling, and 99% of waste is allocated to recycling subsidiaries.

This classification values the company´s performance based on long-term environmental and social criteria and on business practices that provide value. In this sense, Celsa France recycles a total of 680,000 tons of Steel per year and has all the certifications needed for environmental matters: ISO 9001, ISO 14001, EMAS, OHSAS 18001, ISO 50001 y SUSSTEEL.

Patrick Gilet, manager of Celsa France, was pleased to consider that the awards recognize the company´s strategy for the environment and environmental awareness. “To care for the environment is in our company´s DNA, in addition to the concept of sustainable development, which helps us to be more efficient and is a competitive advantage that gives the skills to thrive in a new economic environment where the basic resources should be to preserve water, energy and raw materials.”

All the steel plants of Celsa Group in Spain and France have the “Steel Sustainability Brand”, awarded to steel manufacturers with CSR strategy and environmental awareness.

CELSA Group™, paradigm of the circular economy

CELSA Group™, the first Spanish private steel group and the third long steel products manufacturer in Europe, is fully committed to sustainability and the environment and is a clear example of the circular economy. All this was achieved thanks to the refined process of production of steel from recycled scrap made exclusively in electric ovens, and that is currently the most efficient and environmentally-friendly technology. Throughout all the Group in 2016, a total of 8 million tons of ferric scrap were recycled. Celsa Group is also the first industrial recycler in Spain. In 2016, there was a total of more than 4 million tons of recycled scrap.

All products manufactured by Celsa Group are 100% recyclable. Steel is one of the most recyclable and recycled materials in the world. It can be recycled continuously without losing its properties and, thanks to its magnetic attributes, it can be easily recovered for recycling. Additionally, more than 90% of the waste generated by CELSA Group is reused, recycled, recovered, and valued.
