  • The Annual Meeting of the Global Steel Wire Group, a business unit of CELSA Group™, took place at the Paraninfo of the Universidad de Cantabria on Wednesday
  • The president of Cantabria, Miguel Ángel Revilla, and the mayor of Santander, Gema Igual, highlighted the importance of GSW for the economic momentum of the region

Global Steel Wire Group, a business unit of CELSA Group™ specialized in high quality wire rod and based in Santander, held its Annual Meeting on Wednesday to summarize the year, define objectives and deliver awards to recognize the company’s professionals who have stood out in many categories, including the contribution to the Group’s objectives and the representation of its corporate values.

The event was attended by the president of Cantabria, Miguel Ángel Revilla, and the mayor of Santander, Gema Igual. Both highlighted the importance of GSW and CELSA Group™ for the region.

Currently, GSW generates more than 1,200 jobs in Cantabria directly and more than 4,000 indirectly. In fact, its activity currently represents around 5% of all Cantabrian GDP. The Group´s presence is also growing in sectors of high technological levels, such as the automotive industry, which is directly linked to the fact that 25% of the annual traffic at the port of Santander is related to the organization.

The event was attended by the president of CELSA Group™, Francesc Rubiralta, and the managing director of Global Steel Wire, Javier Echavarri.

Echavarri valued the improvements made on safety over the year and emphasized the importance of “continuing to make progress in reducing costs and improving service, as well as progressively increasing market share by incorporating applications and new sectors to achieve the defined objectives”.

During the meeting, the situation of the automotive industry, in which GSW is one of the main producers of steel components, was also analyzed. Despite the decrease registered in enrolments and productions over 2019, the Group is confident that this will be a timely situation and that the coming years will be marked by the boom of the electric vehicle.

Francesc Rubiralta congratulated the entire team “for their efforts and commitment to the organization”, underlining “the importance of moving towards greater competitiveness from a socially responsible perspective”. CELSA Group™ is currently the largest recycler plant in Spain and the second in Europe with more than eight million tones of iron scrap recycled each year.

Award-giving ceremony to GSW professionals:
During the event, internal awards were given to those professionals whose contributions or initiatives stood out in different fields.

These included the Safety Awards, aimed at the most important initiatives and attitudes in the field of security; the Values Awards, to recognize behaviors and attitudes aligned with the values of the Group; the Francisco Rubiralta Awards, which recognizes projects or initiatives that have had a direct and significant impact on the Group’s results; and the Child Safety & Environment Awards, which serves to bring families closer to CELSA Group™ through a drawing contest intended for children.

Finally, Francesc Rubiralta, president of CELSA Group™, concluded by explaining that “the awards are a fundamental aspect and an opportunity to value all those initiatives and behaviors that make the Group a better place”, as well as stressing that “it is an honor being able to highlight the human factor of our team and enhance those practices that identifies the most with our values, taking into account that people are the most important asset of our organization”.
